Resin to Fabric Ratio

Resin to fabric ratio defines the proportion of resin relative to fiberglass or composite cloth within a surfboard laminate, determining weight, strength, flex response and overall structural efficiency. An optimal ratio delivers full fibre saturation without excess resin, preventing brittleness, unnecessary weight gain or weak bonding across layers. The ratio is strongly influenced by resin viscosity, as thinner or thicker systems change how resin wets the fibres and how evenly it distributes through the laminate. It is also affected by wet-out quality, where proper application ensures clean fibre definition and eliminates voids. Further refinement depends on squeegee technique, as controlled pressure removes excess resin and calibrates laminate density. Shapers and laminators tune the resin-to-fabric ratio through curing control, fibre selection and construction choices that maintain responsiveness, feedback and control.
