Hollow Board

A hollow board is a surfboard constructed with a hollow internal core instead of traditional foam, using engineered chambers or rib structures to reduce weight, increase buoyancy and create a distinct flex pattern. Hollow designs deliver a responsive, lively feel and are commonly built from wood, composite skins or hybrid laminates bonded over an internal frame.

The absence of foam reduces material usage and supports more sustainable construction compared to conventional PU or eco-foam cores. Hollow boards rely on carefully tuned rib spacing, stringer alternatives and venting systems to manage internal pressure, weight distribution and long-term structural stability.

Hydrodynamic performance depends on precision shaping of the outer shell, where the interplay between stringer engineering, rail geometry and flex behaviour determines board feel. Hollow construction can enhance glide, trim and sensitivity, especially in longboards and alternative shapes inspired by historic designs.

Shapers refine hollow-board performance through frame design, material selection and construction choices that maintain responsiveness, feedback and control.
