Filipe Cunha

Filipe Cunha

Product Manager / Quality Control

Filipe Cunha, Product Manager and Head of Quality Control at Blue Room, brings with him a wealth of experience that reflects decades of dedication to surfing and the culture that surrounds it. Born in Lisbon in 1979 and living in Costa da Caparica, Filipe grew up among waves and surfboards, with a deep connection to the local community and the sport. An active competitor for the Costa da Caparica Surfing Association since the early 1990s, Filipe quickly made a name for himself not only as a surfer, but also as a trainer of new surfers. Since 1999, he has been a constant presence in the training of surfers, collaborating with various surf schools in Caparica. At the same time, Filipe has enriched his academic training, completing two postgraduate courses in Sports at Lusófona University, as well as level I and II courses in Surfing and Performance. His passion for surfboards began at an early age: in 2001, he made his first boards with friends, marking the start of a long-standing relationship with board design and construction. This journey was deepened by remarkable professional experiences, including working in leading shops such as Riderstore, in Costa da Caparica and Ericeira, where Filipe had the opportunity to collaborate with international shapers such as Darren Sims, Peter Lawson and Marcio Zouvi. The highlight of this stage was undoubtedly working with John Carper, shaper of the iconic JC Hawaii brand, where Filipe honed his skills directly in the shaping room. In 2007, Filipe founded Board Culture Caparica, a shop specialising in technical equipment, and in 2011 he took a decisive step by creating The Collective, a surf shop that redefined the traditional surf shop concept in Portugal. The space was not just a point of sale, but a centre dedicated to the true culture of surfing, offering customers personalised service, custom-made boards and a sustainable philosophy. This approach was even reflected in the decoration of the space, with recycled elements, emphasising the environmental commitment and collaboration with Sea Shepherd, an NGO focused on protecting the oceans. In 2012, Filipe began producing boards for The Collective brand, in partnership with Hawaiian shaper Christian Budroe. From the outset, the focus was on creating contemporary boards with innovative design and a strong visual identity, aligned with the values of sustainability and authenticity. Today, at Blue Room, Filipe channels all his experience into ensuring that every board produced reflects the highest standards of quality and innovation. With a vision that combines tradition and modernity, he is a key part of Blue Room's mission to create surfboards that inspire surfers of all levels, while promoting a culture of excellence and sustainability.<br>
Sérgio Carmo

Sérgio Carmo

Glass Manager/Laminator

Sérgio Carmo, Glass Manager and Laminator at Blue Room, is a true surf craftsman, combining a passion for the sea, in-depth knowledge of materials and an artistic vision to transform each board into a unique piece of work. With a degree in Industrial Design, Sérgio developed an early fascination for the materials and techniques used in surfboard construction, embarking on a path of constant evolution and discovery. In the early years, Sérgio honed his skills based on trial and error, learning from each experience. His curiosity to explore beyond conventional boards led him to embrace constructive challenges and experiment with techniques such as the use of pigmented resins and old school finishes. For Sérgio, lamination is much more than a technical step; it's the `skin' that coats the shape, transforming it into a magical vehicle, a reflection of the connection between mind, body and the energy of the sea. Over time, Sérgio has redefined the concept of `clear' boards, once considered banal, integrating form and function in an innovative way. His work is characterised by a balance between lightness, functionality and the performance demands of his clients, which requires a deep understanding of all the stages of the manufacturing process. Sérgio believes that knowledge is infinite, and the evolution of raw materials and techniques is a constant invitation to learn and excel. His connection to the sea began as a child, with bodyboarding and a passion for catching waves, evolving into surfing in all its forms: shortboard, longboard and other styles that exploit the energy of the waves. This experience has moulded his sensibility as a board designer, understanding not only the technical impact but also the emotional one that each board can bring to the surfer. At Blue Room, Sérgio is a key player in the lamination and finishing process, bringing with him a rare combination of technique, creativity and a deep connection with the ocean. Each board that passes through his hands reflects not only a quality product, but a celebration of surf culture and the harmonious relationship between man and sea. With an open mind and tireless curiosity, Sérgio continues to raise the standards of quality and innovation in the surfboard industry.
